Yeah, yeah, it’s getting all sorts of awards, including eight Academy Awards. I do have to agree, it is a fine film, although there’s not much to it to warrant its acclaim over any of the many fine films that come out every year. Slumdog Millionaire follows the story of a guy as he participates in India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, which is the medium for unraveling his backstory at the same time. The film is well-produced and very bright and colorful, although I have to admit that India is such a colorful and vibrant place that you could make a compelling film just by pressing “play” on a camcorder.
When it comes down to it, Slumdog Millionaire is a film that can’t be judged by initial impressions. For instance, it looks like it could be geared for kids (it isn’t), or that it’s a Bollywood film (it isn’t, except for its dance sequence during the credits), but it’s basically an English film that checks all the right marks to make it appealing to almost anyone. There’s no real urgency to see this movie, but it is definitely worth your time.
